Inauguration of Vermi-compost Plant at women entrepreneurs industrial park

November 24, 2012

Dr. Dieter Mutz, Director of the Indo German Environment Partnership (IGEP) Programme of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, inaugurated the Vermi-compost Plant set up by a women entrepreneur at the industrial estate of the Association of Lady Entrepreneurs of Andhra Pradesh (ALEAP) located at Gajularamaram in Hyderabad.

The industrial estates across the country, in general, produce variety of wastes, including those that fall under the category of Municipal Solid Waste as defined under the Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000 of the Environment Protection Act. Such wastes, if properly segregated, collected and treated, offer ample opportunities for recycle and reuse. Also, this can prove to be an innovative opportunity for developing small-scale entrepreneurships, which integrates social and environmental benefits into the business model.

GIZ is providing technical support to ALEAP, on the above lines, for demonstrating recycling and reuse of organic waste generated from various industries in ALEAP Industrial Estate. The vermi-compost facility at the ALEAP Industrial Estates houses a total of 16 vermi-compost pits, with each pit having 2 tons capacity. The waste is collected by the facility operator from individual industries. At the facility, the process of formation of compost takes about 60 days and the total compost generated during this process will be about 19 - 20 tonnes per one full cycle.

The compost produced from the facility will be used for organic farming to grow vegetables in the earmarked area in the industrial estates and will also be sold in the open market. The process will also generate about 70%-100% more worms, which can be also sold in the market. The technical support and training is being provided by the Society for Technology & Action for Rural Advancement (TARA) of the Development Alternatives Group, New Delhi.

Mrs. Rama Devi, President of ALEAP, Mrs. Padmavati, Operator of the Vermi-compost Facility and other entrepreneur from the ALEAP Industrial Estate were present. Also, present were Mr. Raghu Babu, Mr. Hrishikesh Mahadev, and Mr. P. Ganesh from GIZ, and Mr. Pulkit Jain from TARA.
