"Resource Initiative in India"

Using resources more intelligently and efficiently makes a fundamental contribution in ensuring that India keeps on a sustainable economic growth path. A two-day workshop on detecting ways forward to foster and promote the sustainable use of resources in India was held at Best Western Resort Country Club in Manesar, December 6-7, 2012. The workshop was organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This workshop was the commencement of the “Resource Initiative”.

In this workshop, the scientific consortium comprised of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU), the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, the Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Together they outlined the ecological, political, social and economic dimensions of natural resources in India. Data was presented to give a broad picture of the current and future resource consumption and demand of India. In addition, special attention was drawn towards a selection of raw materials which were assessed in terms of their criticality. The consortium evaluated international and national resource policies in order to identify possible policy options for resource efficiency in India.

The “Resource Initiative” has a long-term vision to foster the efficient and sustainable use of resources in India by involving diverse stakeholders from the public and private sector. The initiative aims at both the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the extraction, processing and consumption of resources and the increase of the Indian economy through the smart use of resources which potentially leads to more competitiveness and more job creation.
