Resource Initiative - Leveraging Efficiency to meet India’s needs

Thursday, May 23, 2013, 9.30 AM - 6.30 PM

Jacaranda Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi

The importance of giving attention to resource use, with rising wants and needs but finite resources, is becoming very important. To take this discussion forward in India, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) organized a multi-stakeholder event on resource efficiency called ‘Resource Initiative – Leveraging Efficiency to meet India’s Needs’, at the India Habitat Centre, on Thursday, May 23.

The event focused on India, while drawing on relevant experiences from around the globe on resource use and efficiency. The objective was to understand the rationale, scope and challenges of resource use and needs in India and its implications for sustainable growth. In particular, efficiency aspects along the product life-cycle and related benefits for different stakeholders were highlighted. The event aimed to highlight the main challenges with regard to resource use, possible resource management options, and the impact of fostering resource efficiency on different stakeholders. The event presented the findings of the study undertaken jointly by TERI, Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung (IFEU), Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI), Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and was supported by GIZ. Valuable participation and contributions from Indian and European experts from the public and private sector have been made towards the success of the event. The inaugural session was held by Mr Pachauri, the General Director of TERI, Mr Cravinho, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union and Mr Meier-Klodt, Deputy Chief of Mission, German Embassy. They emphasized the importance of sustainable resource use to achieve a fine balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
